The economic benefit of North Carolina health systems and hospitals on local and state economies is significant. Health systems and hospitals are economic anchors. They strengthen the infrastructure of local communities by attracting and maintaining businesses, workers and retirees.
Ensuring the viability of North Carolina health systems and hospitals is critical to the health and economies of North Carolina counties and communities. To illustrate the scope of health systems and hospitals’ economic impact in North Carolina, NCHA commissioned RTI International to conduct research and develop a report based on 2020 data.
Among the findings, NC health systems and hospitals generated $40 billion in gross domestic product impacts; directly created 268,000 jobs; and altogether supported more than 500,000 jobs.
