Patrick Broos, Director of Supply Chain Management at Catawba Valley Medical Center (CVMC) and Adjunct Faculty at Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC), became interested in the supply chain industry after a golfing accident landed him in the hospital. During his lengthy recovery, he spent a lot of time in and out of hospitals and became intrigued by the healthcare supply chain. Now, Patrick mentors students and teaches them about the importance of supply chain management, both in healthcare and other fields.

To encourage more students in his community to pursue careers in this field, Patrick started the Supply Chain Academy at Catawba Valley Community College. This 8-week course provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the supply chain management industry and covers topics such as logistics, inventory management, procurement, and supply chain strategy. In addition to serving as an instructor for the Academy, Patrick also attends career fairs at the elementary, middle, and high school level to introduce students to the concept of supply chain and inspire them to consider it as a career.

Patrick believes that a “home grown” approach to building the workforce creates and retains talent in the communities that need it most. It is important for students to enter into fields, like healthcare supply chain management, and then apply their skills in the local community, especially in rural areas.

“When you grow your own pipeline and you reinvest in the students and the community, you then become the destination for people wanting to either move to or work in your community,” said Patrick.

In the future, Patrick would like the Supply Chain Academy to be offered at every community college in North Carolina. He feels the biggest barrier to supply chain is that people do not know it exists. Patrick is working to bridge this gap and inspire the next generation of healthcare supply chain leaders.
